Description

Reporting to the Area Fleet Manager, you will take day-to-day responsibility for the engineering team ensuring that we consistently deliver safe, reliable, well-presented buses in accordance with our company’s policies and standards. Drawing on experience gained within a fast-paced challenging environment you will ensure that your team achieves specified targets, contractual obligations and commercial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure that the engineering team supply the required number of vehicles to the required standards on time every time.
Agree, implement, and monitor targets associated with planned and unplanned maintenance.
Responsible for engineering and vehicle logistics at their garage(s), making use of relevant IT systems.
Help solve technical issues, manage suppliers and vehicle manufacturers.
Lead, motivate and develop your team to ensure that targets and standards are achieved consistently.
Manage staff discipline and termination.
Work harmoniously with the operating team when discussing routine matters, such as mileage coding. Likewise trade union officials.
Assist relevant departments to investigate accidents.
Lead on Identifying, and rectifying, vehicle fault trends.
Organise and monitor cleaning and maintenance of garage(s), including the associated equipment, plant and tools, as per company and legislative requirements.
Proactively manage and enhance welfare and health and safety standards through mentoring and training.
Ensure legislative compliance and adherence to company policies.
Proactive internal and external stakeholder management.
Playing a key role in shaping the future direction of the engineering department at depot and company level.
Act as on-call engineering lead at weekends (rota shared with other FM’s).

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Excellent understanding of the road passenger transport sector, including all relevant legal and external regulations and requirements for the safe operation of passenger carrying vehicles.
Excellent working knowledge of all daily site procedures, engineering processes, health and safety regulations, DVSA standards, and people management practices.
Have a passion to lead by example and motivate a team to achieve high standards of performance.
A commitment to continuous improvement, especially in relation to safety critical matters.
Flexible approach to working hours with a 24-hour mindset.
Capable of working harmoniously with suppliers, such as when new products are launched and warranty claims invoked.
Good IT skills to ensure vehicle, and other, garage-based records are always in order.
An effective staff manager with creative allocation and delegation skills.
Capable of suggesting innovative ideas/ways of working and ability to prioritise workload.
Ability to manage budget and cost control.
Awareness of TfL contract system and thorough understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice.
Ability to work with Operations, Performance and Engineering colleagues in a collaborative manner.
Membership of a recognised professional engineering body is desirable.
